Welcome to the new Website
Welcome to the Big Pine Ditch
Welcome, and thank you for visiting the new online home of the Big Pine Irrigation and Improvement Association. Whether you've irrigated from the community ditch for years or you're just getting to know the system, we're glad you're here.
This website was created to give Big Pine residents and property owners one convenient, reliable place to find the information they need about our community irrigation system — and to make it a little easier for all of us to keep that system running well.
What the Big Pine Ditch Is
The Big Pine Irrigation and Improvement Association operates and maintains the community irrigation ditch system that serves properties throughout Big Pine. The system delivers surface water through the community ditch network for outdoor irrigation, and participating property owners can receive that water right on their own property if they choose to take part.
It's worth noting that this is a system for irrigation only. It is separate from Big Pine's household drinking-water system.
A Little History
The modern Big Pine ditch system grew out of the Inyo–Los Angeles Long-Term Water Agreement. That agreement called for reconstructing and improving the town's existing irrigation ditches and building additional ditches to reach more properties in Big Pine — with the requirement that the system be operated and maintained by a local Big Pine organization, separate from Inyo County and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The goal was straightforward: re-establish a working ditch system so Big Pine residents could once again have surface water delivered through their properties if they wanted it. The agreement authorized funding for reconstruction, upgrades, and new ditches, and provided for a flow of water to be made available to the system while protecting existing water rights and delivery rates.
The Association completed the phases of the project it was responsible for, and the improved system has been operating since 2005. It remains a working part of Big Pine's water infrastructure today.
Our Purpose
The Association exists to operate and maintain Big Pine's community irrigation ditch system and to help make irrigation water available to the properties it serves. Day to day, that means keeping the system functioning, sharing important operational information, and supporting the continued use of the ditch network throughout the community.
What You'll Find Here
This site is being developed as a central source for irrigation information. As it grows, residents and property owners will be able to come here for:
Irrigation-season announcements Planned shutoffs and service interruptions Maintenance and repair notices Important updates from the Association General guidance on using and maintaining a property's irrigation connection Contact information and answers to common questions
Looking ahead, the Association hopes to explore secure online account services. Down the road, these may allow participating property owners to review amounts owed, receive payment reminders, and pay their irrigation bills online. Those services will be added only once they've been properly approved and established — so keep an eye out as the site continues to develop.
Preserving a Community Resource
Big Pine's irrigation ditches are part of the community's working water infrastructure, and keeping them healthy takes clear communication and responsible maintenance. This website is here to make dependable information easier to find, to strengthen communication between the Association and participating property owners, and to help the irrigation system run more efficiently for everyone it serves.
Thanks for being part of the Big Pine community. Take a look around, check back for updates, and reach out anytime with questions.
Welcome aboard.
